Dear Friend of the Archangel Marketplace,
This year, from July 26 – 30, the Canadian Archdiocesan Assembly of the Orthodox Church in America is holding its tri-annual conference here in Victoria, at the University of Victoria. In conjunction with this assembly, under the umbrella of the Archdiocese and hosted by All Saints of Alaska Orthodox Church is a very unusual public event: The Archangel Marketplace.
Our mandate is simple : to share the beauty of Christianity through art, literature, and music.
The Archangel Marketplace is bringing together churches, non-profit groups, involved artists, artisans, musicians and craftspeople from the Greater Victoria area and beyond to create a community network of recognition, support and appreciation. With the recent governmental cuts in funding for social services, educational and arts programs, there is a need to sustain awareness of the valuable resources and services available through these individuals and organizations.
This is a first-time event with minimal financial resources, but the Archangel Marketplace website www.archangelmarket.com has attracted over 1,000 unique visitors since June 1, with over 2,500 pageviews. Posters and handouts are now in a number of supporting churches and local businesses.
We have a number of special public events planned that are unique to the city :
1) Master Iconographer Heather McKean of the USA giving a lecture on The Theological Language of Icons. This art form traces its origins to early Biblical times and is highly-specialized, requiring a lifetime of study of both the painting techniques and the theology that underpins it.
2) Taizé-style prayer song with Bambie Maree, AVCM and Kevin Leitch. The name of their duo is Prions - Let Us Pray. Originating in a monastic community in France, Taizé gives its name to a sung contemplative prayer form that is now known worldwide for its simplicity and beauty. There will be two performances daily of this unique style of music. The Victoria firm Allison Piano has donated a beautiful, brand new Heintzman baby grand for this daily Special Event.
3) The performance debut of North America’s newest Orthodox choral Ensemble: Eirene. Their chant style draws from the earliest hymns of the Christian church and encompasses Byzantine and other ancient forms.
The Archangel Marketplace is being held at the University of Victoria, Student Union Building, Michele Pujol Room, on the plaza facing Ring Road. Because of our organization’s charitable status and because this is a first-time venture, the table/space fees are low to attract sufficient vendors to cover the cost of the room and basic advertising.
We hope to raise $3,000 in sponsorship dollars to provide honoraria for our guest artisan and the musical performers in this community event, and pay for incidental logistics needs. Donations are tax-deductible, and receipts are issued by the Archdiocese of Canada of the Orthodox Church in America. All cash donations are eligible for a tax receipt.
The success of the Archangel Marketplace this year will mean that it can continue to grow, and become a vibrant part of Victoria’s cultural landscape.
On behalf of the Archangel Marketplace, we are asking for your support in helping us reach this goal.
Any amount is appreciated, and we look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours truly,
